Who was Saint Nicholas?

Saint Nicholas was born on March 15, 270, and story has it that his parents died because of a plague. He was devoted to God from a young age, and when his parents died, his uncle took him in. He prayed a lot and eventually became a Greek Bishop and a Christian saint. It is said that miracles happened when he prayed, and he had a reputation for giving gifts without making himself known. This secret gift-giving reputation is what made him the model for Santa Claus, which came from the Dutch Sinterklaas. I found it very interesting that Saint Nicholas died on December 6, 343, and the early to mid 300s is when Christians set December 25th to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
