Bird Day, National Bird Day and Migratory Bird Day

So here are a few bird days rolled into one. Bird Day is always on May 4th, National Bird Day is celebrated today, January 5th, and International Migratory Bird Day is on the second Saturday in May. Most people love birds, and bird watching is a favorite hobby for a lot people. It is the most popular of hobbies, probably because anyone, old or young, can enjoy watching birds.

Why are there 3 different bird days?

  • Bird Day is the oldest of the days specially made to enjoy birds because it was started on May 4, 1894. Charles Almanzo Babcock, superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania started Bird Day to focus on conservation training and awareness.
  • National Bird Day was set up by bird activists to bring attention to the cause of birds in captivity.
  • International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the amazing journey that some “migratory” birds take each year.
  • These migrating birds fly thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their winter homes in Central and South America. Redding and other nearby cities are home to beautiful Canadian geese. They come up here in the spring on their way to Canada and Alaska, where they stay during the warmer months. Then they visit us again in the fall on their way south to winter in Mexico.
