June 29th is Waffle Iron Day. This day in early summer is a good day to celebrate the great kitchen gadget that makes wonderful tasting waffles. Waffles are cooked between two metal plates, and nowadays electricity is what powers the machine to heat the plates. Waffles have been made since the 1300s in Greece. The Greeks cooked flat cakes between two metal pans that were heated by fire, and they put cheeses and herbs on top because pancake syrup was not around then. Now, 700 years later, we are still making waffles but with syrup, and/or our favorite fruits.
Even though we put sweet things on waffles, they are not just for breakfast. They are good for lunch or dinner too. So how are you going to celebrate this fun day? Make your favorite kind of waffles! And if you are too busy to make waffles yourself, buy some frozen waffles from your grocery store, or order them out at a restaurant. I like to put Greek yogurt on my waffles. What do you like to put on your waffles? We want to know!
This week we will look at the health benefits of fruit.
