The original reason why the Pilgrims had celebrated this feast with the neighboring Native Americans was to thank God for keeping them alive, safe, healthy, and supplied with enough to eat. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, and it was originally a three day feast where they ate a huge variety of animals, birds, fish, and the abundance of fruits and vegetables from the fall harvest. It was celebrated every so often until the 1800s when it became a yearly tradition. Then in 1941, Congress made the fourth Thursday in November a national holiday called Thanksgiving.
Besides eating a lot of good food, many families gather around the table and say what they are thankful for! I’m thankful for my health, the place where I live, my jobs, my friends from my Bible study groups, and my church and the amazing worship there. What are you thankful for? Let us know!
