Dogs In the Service

Dogs are amazing animals! They make amazing pets and service animals. They have also served as police dogs since the late 1800s. Then they started to be considered for war service in World War I, and on March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army started training dogs for the War Dog Program. The War Dog Program was also called “K-9 Corps.” The dogs were trained to carry messages along the network of trenches, tell patrols the enemy was sneaking up on them, and they comforted the soldiers.

One of the most famous war dogs was Rin Tin Tin. He was an abandoned puppy of the Germans that a Untied States soldier found. He survived World War I and came to the United States where he became famous after being in silent films. Click here to see a clip of Rin Tin Tin.
