So what is the story behind Valentine's Day? There were 3 saints named Valentine who were said to have been martyrs and died on February 14th. A martyr is someone who is killed for their faith. Very little is known about these saints except for a few facts. One was the bishop of Interamna (modern Terni), one a Roman priest, and another was a saint who died with his friends in a Roman provence in South Africa. It is a known fact that the Roman priest was killed on February 14th in 269 AD. He was a strong Christian and revivalist, and it is said that while he was in prison, he prayed for the jailer's daughter and she was healed from her blindness. It is also said that the Emperor Claudius II banded marriages because the soldiers were wanting to stay home with their wives and families. So Valentine secretly married couples who were in love until he was arrested. While he was in prison, he encouraged the emperor to become a Christian, but he did not succeed and was killed on February 14, 269 AD. Several hundred years after Valentine's death, February 14th became a day to celebrate romantic love.line
