Why it is Important to Understand Abuse (Part 1)

It is very important to me that my peers know about abuse. When I do presentations, I usually hear about people’s personal experiences. They talk about abuse that has happened to them.

It is important for ALL people to know about abuse because if they are aware of what abuse is, who can abuse them, where abuse might happen, when abuse could happen, and what kinds of abuse there are, then they CAN seek help.

I want to assist people to not be afraid. I want my peers to know what to do if something happens to them. I want them to know they can turn to their Service Coordinator or someone they trust to tell them what is happening. They need to keep telling people until they find the right person to help them. No one should be afraid to stand up for themselves when they have a gut feeling that something is wrong! I feel this will make them stronger to report their own abuse.

I want people to not get hurt. Abuse is NEVER okay.

There are five types of abuse I will be talking about. In the following weeks I will share what it is and what to do to about it. In my next blog I will be talking about Emotional or Mental Abuse.
