Martin Luther King Day

This is the third Monday in January, which means that today is Martin Luther King Day. He was born on January 15, 1929, and he become one of the greatest Social Activists in the world. The racism and segregation of his day made him devote his life to bringing about equality in America. By age 35, he had become a Social Activist leader and the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace prize. He fought for social justice and equality for every person no matter what gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status they were, and he traveled all over giving speeches, motivational speeches, to move people to let go of their prejudices and racism. His “I have a dream ” speech was given at the Civil Rights March in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963 to move the people of the United States to end racism.

For the next five years, he met with leaders, but his strength and publicity stirred up a lot of hatred among those who did not agree with his views. His last speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top” was on April 3, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, the day before he was assassinated. On April 4, 1968 while he was making a speech from the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee, he was shot and killed. Fifteen years later, in 1983, Congress made his birthday a National Holiday as a day for us to serve our community.
