So happy Labor Day on this day of September 1st! Labor Day is all about celebrating those who work and is therefore also called the “workingman’s holiday”. If you work somewhere, then this holiday is for celebrating you! New York City celebrated the first Labor Day on September 5, 1882, then 2 years later it was moved to the first Monday in September. Labor Day quickly became popular, and 10 years later, on June 28, 1894, Congress voted it in as a national holiday. This day is celebrated by union sponsored parades, and people often plan to have their last picnic of the summer on this day because it has been officially declared the last day of summer.
Interestingly, 4 years earlier, on September 1, 1878, Emma Nutt became the first woman telephone operator. She loved the job, and stayed there for 33 years. Her position has now been replaced by automation in telephone systems. A funny bit about her is that she was “very thankful that my first name was not Imma”.
