Did you know that Memorial Day was called Decoration Day until 1882? Maybe this was because it is a day to honor the decorated service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. The Civil War in 1865 changed a lot of things, and because so many people died, May 30th was named Decoration Day to honor the soldiers should had died for freedom. In 1882, Decoration Day was renamed Memorial Day, and in 1971, Congress moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May so that we can enjoy a 3 day weekend. So go watch a parade or visit a veteran and listen to their stories then tell us what you learned from them!
