Did you know that the best way to help others is to first take care of yourself? Several of the blogs in this new year have talked about respecting yourself, creating healthy boundaries and having a good self-esteem. These are a few of the ways we need to take care of ourselves, so that we can help others better. Here is an example: a person who sets healthy boundaries has the ability to help others without ending up letting them down because the person looks ahead. If a person with healthy boundaries doesn't think they can do what is needed, they say say so, instead of agreeing to help and then not being able to come through. Also, eating healthy can make a person stronger physically so they can do more to help others without getting tired or sick. Being clean, with clean clothes, clean hair, clean teeth, etc., makes a person more pleasant to be around as well. No matter how tired I am, I make sure that I am squeaky clean and smell clean, so that it is not unpleasant for those who are around me and those I am helping. All of these ways of taking care of ourselves are not only necessities for our own personal well-being, but they also truly do affect how well we can help others.
