The Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was created as a result of World War I. This treaty wanted to see the nations of the world work together in a gathering of national leaders called the League of Nations to keep from having another war between nations. President Woodrow Wilson supported this treaty so strongly that in July of 1919, he personally came to the committee who was voting on it and tried to convinced them to vote it into law without making any changes to it. No president before him had spoken like this to a committee get them to vote for a treaty.

While the committee was talking about this treaty, President Wilson went to the American people, ignoring his doctors’ advice. He started traveling all over the country on September 2, 1919, on a “whistle-stop tour” of the country, to get support from the American people for the treaty and the League. He gave 3 speeches every day, and on the 25th of September, after one of these speeches, he collapsed. So he went back to his home in Washington, where he had a stroke a week later, on October 2nd. The stroke partially paralyzed on his left side and ended his presidential career. After a great struggle, the Senate voted on March 19, 1920 to ratify the treaty but only with a few changes.
