Today is National Aviation (Flight) Day. It is celebrated in honor of the birthday of Orville Wright, the first person to successfully fly an airplane. His birthday was on August 19, 1871. The Wright Brothers began by fixing bicycles, and during this process they made a bicycle that had equal size tires. The first bicycles had one big wheel and one small wheel, which often made it flip over. They then explored the use of hang-gliders and wondered what would happen if they put a motor on one. Out came the first airplane, and when Orville was 32, on December 17, 1903, he made his first flight. This first flight took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and changed transportation forever. President Franklin D. Roosevelt made this a special day in 1939 to honor the accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright.
