National Eat Your Veggies Day!

The first time National Eat Your Veggies Day was celebrated was in 1991 by the American “United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association”. They created cartoon characters like Lord Mushroom playing a flute, I.C. Berg doing a jig, and Onion Joy smiling through its one tear to help teach people about the importance of eating vegetables. So why is eating your veggies so important? Well, veggies:

  • give our bodies the vitamins and minerals we need to be healthy
  • give our bodies fiber that cleans out our digestive tract and keeps our bad cholesterol down
  • can protect against some types of cancers
  • might lower our risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes
  • may also lower blood pressure, lower the risk of getting kidney stones and lower the chance of having bone loss
  • Most veggies are also low in calories, especially the leafy green veggies, including brocoli! So eat those veggies!!
