Earth Day had its very beginning about 50 years ago. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson wanted to encourage people to think about the environment, and he even got President Kennedy to go on a tour around the nation to support care about the environment. Yet nothing happened until 1970. On April 22, 1970, the first National Earth Day was celebrated, and it had huge support. About 20 million Americans walked the street to support the environment and protest the things that are bad for the environment. This made people aware that our planet has resources that will run out, and that our eco-system has to keep itself working. For the first time, people saw that the things we are putting in the air, water and earth are hurting the environment and us.
