Thomas Jefferson was our 3rd president and was in office from 1801 to 1809. He had worked in the government for 26 years by the time he became president. This day in history: on March 27, 1775, Jefferson was elected to the second Continental Congress. He settled in quickly in the Continental Congress after he published his paper called A Summary View of the Rights of British America. During the next year, Jefferson published some more papers, and several of them were Drafts and Notes on the Virginia Constitution.
In June 1776, Congress had to choose someone to write out their Declaration of Independence, and they chose Thomas Jefferson to compose the document. So when Jefferson was only 33 years old, he finished writing out one of the most important documents in the history of democracy, The Declaration of Independence. A few changes were made, and it was given the title, A Declaration by the Representatives in General Congress Assembled on June 28, 1776. Then after more talking, the document was finished on July 4, 1776 and called The Declaration of Independence.
