First Woman To Work In The White House

January 2nd, 1890 marked the day when Benjamin Harrison welcomed the first woman staffer, Alice Sanger, to work in the White House.  Harrison's presidency was somewhat uneventful, except for this one event, an event that may have been very

strengthening for the woman's suffrage movement.  Suffrage is the fight for the right to vote!  That same year, 1890, 2 of the strongest groups who were fighting for women's right to vote, the American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman Suffrage Association, came together to make the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA).  NAWSA was a combined group of people fighting for women's right to vote, people wanting to make changes in society, and people who wanted everyone to stay away from all alcohol.  They demanded stronger female property rights, employment and educational opportunities for women, improved divorce and child custody laws and reproductive freedom.  Harrison influenced women's place in government by hiring Alice Sanger and may have also strengthened the women's suffrage.  Women won the right to vote 30 years later.
