International Day of Persons with Disabilities!

Did you know that today, December 3rd, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities?  About 15% of  the world’s population have a disability.  People with disabilities make up the largest minority group.  International Day of Persons with Disabilities was made to focus on ways to take away the things that keep persons with disabilities from being able to participate in every area of society.  In 1976, the United Nations General Assembly said that 1981 would be the International Year of Disabled Persons.  So in 1981, plans were made at the national, regional and international levels to make equal opportunities, rehabilitation and prevention of disabilities the focus.  Then from 1983 to 1992, Governments and organizations worked extra hard to make these plans a reality.  The United Nations General Assembly called that time from 1983-1992, the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons.  Now, International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on December 3rd!
