Columbus Day
In school, we learn that Columbus discovered America in 1492. The Native Americans discovered America first, thousands of years ago. Then the Nordic explores came down the east coast. Columbus discovered America, calling it the Ne
w World. He was Italian, but Italy would not pay for his trip. So the king of Spain paid for Columbus to discover this new land. People in his day believed the world was flat and ended somewhere in the Atlantic until Columbus came back and told them that there were lands across the Atlantic Ocean! He left the port in Spain with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. They left on August 3rd, 1492 and came to the Caribbean Islands near Florida, possibly in October or November 1492. Columbus proved to his world that the earth was round and that there were lands beyond the Atlantic Ocean that they did not know existed. What new things are we discovering now?
