Freedom of Information Day!

Freedom of Information Day caught my attention. It is celebrated on March 16th, but why is it celebrated on March 16th, and what is it all about?

Freedom of Information Day celebrates a very highly valuable concept in American rights, the freedom to have information. It all started with James Madison, our 4th president and the one who has been seen as the “Father of the Constitution” and the main author of the “Bill of Rights”. Freedom of information and individual rights was very important to him, and March 16th was his birthday. So what better day to celebrate the freedom of information than on his birthday? The Freedom of Information Act was passed into law in 1966, and this opened up a wealth of information to American citizens. Now, the internet and our move into the 21st century has brought almost any kind of information to our fingertips, which would make James Madison very happy!
