Human Rights Day was December 10th, but this year’s theme is Human Rights 365. Human Rights 365 days of the year. This is so true, because every day is Human Rights Day! So happy Human Rights Day! Today and every day is a day to celebrate and promote the fact that each and every one of us is entitled to every single human right there is. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “I call on States to honour their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on people to hold their governments to account.” Human Rights Day also encourages and supports the importance of human rights issues all over the world, and this binds us together as a global community who have the same ideals and values.
On December 10th, 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Then 2 years later, in 1950, they made December 10th Human Rights Day in order to bring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the attention “of the peoples of the world.” They wanted to set human rights as the “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.” Celebrating human rights day can be done in many different ways, like giving our time and money to support a human rights issue that is important to us.
