Today, September 15th, is Make a Hat Day! It is most definitely a day to have fun creating a hat for yourself! Make a hat and put your personality into it, or make a hat that your favorite character would wear and be that character for the day. Kids love creating things, so this would be a great project to break the ice during the first few days of the new school year. Even though this day is popular in the elementary grades, it should not ever mean that older kids, even 80 year-olds, can not have fun making hats too. This does not mean if you make a hat that you have to wear it, just have fun making it!
While today was probably started by teachers and students, maybe it began because of Felt Hat Day. So what is Felt Hat Day and when is it? Felt Hat Day is also on September 15th. The difference is that on this day, men usually wear a felt hat, and women can join in if they have a felt hat to wear. Felt Hat Day probably has its roots from the 1930s and 1940s. During this time both men and women wore hats, and felt material was usually the material used for men’s hats. The cooler Fall weather brought men to open their coat closets to find their felt hats. They probably had to dust them off a little before they could start wearing them again.
So, to celebrate this day, make your own hat or wear a felt one!
