International Literacy Day!

Today, September 8th, is International Literacy Day! International Literacy Day is all about celebrating and encouraging reading all around the world. This day was started by the United Nations, then the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), decided to make International Literacy Day a yearly celebration. September 8, 1965 was the first time it was celebrated as an international event. The reason International Literacy Day started was to “highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.”

Literacy is very important all over the world, which is why the UN is so active in encouraging it. They do more than just encourage literacy, they also have created programs worldwide to help anyone who wants to read to be able to read. So, if you are reading this, then you can and should celebrate International Literacy Day! What do you enjoy reading? I love historical fiction novels, and 2 of my favorites are The Silver Chalice by Thomas Costain and The Robe by Lloyd Douglas. What is your favorite book? We want to know!
