We all know that Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor those men and women who died for our freedom and our country. Before 1882, Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day, and in 1882 it was changed to Memorial Day. In 1921, the red crepe paper poppy became the official Memorial Day flower. This red crepe papper poppy is made by veterans who are in hospitals because of being in a war, like World War 1 or 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Grenada/Lebanon and Panama wars, and the Persian Gulf War. So it is still Decoration Day, and any money made from selling these poppies goes to help veterans and their families who are in need.
