Many countries have their own calendar systems with different year cycles. Our year begins on January 1st, and that has become the only globally celebrated holiday. Even though other countries have different calendar systems, January 1st is accepte
d as the start of the global new year. January was named after the Roman god Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings because Janus had 2 faces. One face looked forward to the future while the other face looked backward. So January 1st was chosen as New Year's Day by Julius Caesar in 46 BC.
