From 1774 to 1789, the Continental Congress was the government of the first 13 American colonies and then later the United States. On December 10, 1778, John Jay was elected 6th President of the Continental Congress.
Also on December 10, in 1869,
women were given the right to vote in Wyoming. A few of the western states gave women the right to vote to get more women to move into these less populated territories. However, there were a few legislators who supported women having the right to vote for better reasons. William Bright was a territorial legislator who was convinced by his strong young wife that keeping women from voting was a big injustice. Edward M. Lee also fought to have women have the right to vote because he thought his mother should have the freedom to vote just like African-American men had the right to vote!
